If Your Business Could Talk

If your business could talk to you what would it say? Would it be happy with you right now or does it feel neglected, frustrated or disappointed with you?

This may sound crazy but a couple of weeks ago my coach challenged me to have a dialogue with my business.  I said “What?” “Yup, she said. I want you to journal with your business and find out what it’s thinking.”

So I took on her challenge not knowing what to expect and boy did my business have a lot to say. And it wasn’t all pretty.

Now, bear with me for a moment as you might think I’ve gone off my rocker, but I kept an open mind. I asked my business how it was doing and allowed an answer to pop in.  My business was not too happy with me.  It felt neglected.  Then, it told me that I needed to take some time off to rest my mind and recharge my batteries, not soon but ASAP.

As soon as I heard that, I realized it had been over a year since I took a REAL vacation. You know, the kind where you sit on a beach and do absolutely nothing, completely unplugged, without family or friends – just you and the place you are at.

Now, if you’ve known me, you would know that balance is a huge value of mine. Yet, I had not been honoring the very thing that feeds my soul.

Well, I wasn’t gonna mess around with my business so the next day, I booked a 5 night, 6 day trip to Mexico and left 3 days later.  I just got back last Wednesday and it was AMAZING!

I completely unplugged.  I sat in the sun, got in the ocean every day and rested my mind and soul.  New ideas for my business started popping.  My creativity sparked!

Why am I sharing this with you?  Not to tell you to go take a vacation, but to start to listen more closely to what your business needs from you.

Imagine treating your business like another relationship in your life. For the amount of time and energy you spend in it, it deserves to have a say.  It’s a two-way street.

I invite you this month to dialogue with your business.  It may sound “woo woo” or completely crazy and you might wonder what your business may say or even if something will come through, but you won’t know until you try.

Check out this Month’s Workout below for the steps and specific questions to kickstart the process. I dare you to dive in! The water’s warm and the benefits may astound you.

I’d love to hear what you learned from your business. Post your comments below!

Let’s Put it Into Action – This Month’s Workout

Here’s how to dialogue with your business and see what it has to say (yes, this does require an open mind).

Find some quiet time where you will be uninterrupted.  With a pen and some paper (or your computer if you like to capture info there), begin to ask the questions below and jot down whatever answers come up.  Do not judge or assess what you hear.  Free flow writing is all that needs to happen.  So here goes…

Dear Business,

  1. How are you going?
  2. What do you most need from me?
  3. What can I do to support you?
  4. What is it that you’ve been wanting to do?
  5. What do you most need me to know?
  6. What’s the one thing you’d like me to do differently from now on?

Of course, you can ask more questions as you get more answers.  When you are done, review your answers and pick one action that would most serve your business and just DO IT!!

I’d love to hear how the workout is for you. Post your experiences below!
